Lying in the north-eastern region of India, Assam has a wide array of attractions for its tourists to be explored and savoured at different times of the year. While winters and summers are the best times to visit Assam, monsoon is best avoided. Due to its geographical location Assam receives very heavy rainfall, which impedes travel plans and sightseeing. Even so, the weather in Assam is quite amicable through the rest of the year and makes for some great nature tourism too.

Unlike in most parts of India, a summer in Assam is not too sultry or unbearable. It has a shorter time span and is even refreshing. Temperatures tend to hover between 32°C to 38°C. Whenever it does get too humid or hot, the showers come to the rescue. The best places to explore during summer are the Kaziranga National Park, Majuli, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Haflong, Guwahati and Jorhat. One can also experience the Rongali or Bohag Bihu, one of the three Bihu festivals celebrated in Assam. Bihu is their chief festival.

Assam receives heavy showers during monsoon. It often causes the Brahmaputra to overflow and flood the areas along its banks. Monsoons also witness frequent landslides in different parts of the states that could be risky and inconvenient for travellers. Assam tourism in monsoon is not recommended.

Chilling but refreshing, winter is the best season for travelling to Assam. Temperatures range between 8°C and 25°C and can dip to as low as 6°C in some places. The pleasant weather and the cultural extravaganza of the winter months make Assam-travel an experience of a lifetime. There are two Bihu festivals celebrated during this time; the Kongali or Kati Bihu in October and the Bhogali or Magh Bihu in January. It gives a fantastic opportunity to experience the culture of the Assamese people. During late spring, one might get lucky to catch a glimpse of the orchids in Lakhimpur and at Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park. For the adventure lovers, winter months also witness lots of adventure activities to get their adrenaline pumping.
