Devprayag is a hidden gem in the Tehri region of Uttarkhand. It is a reverred Hindu pilgrimage destination, frequented throughout the year. The word Devprayag literally translates to "Holy Confluence" and this town is situated at the point where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda Rivers join to form the fabled River Ganga. It is also the winter home of the priests of Badrinath. The closest airport to Devprayag can be found in Dehradun and the closest railway station is in Rishikesh.

 

However, the best way to reach is via the well-connected roadway network on offer. By Air:

Having no domestic airport of its own, the closest one to Devprayag can be found at Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, some 90 km away. Visitors can pick from multiple car and bus options to get to Devprayag from here. 

 

By Road:

Situated on NH 58, this is the best way to reach Devprayag due to the well-connected highway system in Uttarakhand. The drive down offers some spectacular views as well. 

 

By Rail:

Rishikesh Railway Station is the closest one to Devprayag, approximately 71 km away. There are a number of local and private transportation options available to get to Devprayag from here.

Summer (April - June):

This is the most ideal season to visit, owing to the clear skies and warm weather, averaging between 18°C - 31°C. It is the ideal time for all outdoor activities. 

 

Winter (October - March):

Temperatures tend to drop during this month, but the weather is still enjoyable and makes for a unique time for trekking and temple visits. 

 

Monsoon (August - September):

Devprayag receives moderate to low rainfall during this season. The chances of landslides and flooding is a possibility. Hence, caution is advised when travelling here during this period.

Visit the conluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda Rivers:

This is a unique meeting point where the epic Ganga River comes into existence. Visitors can spend the day picnicking and taking in the panoramic views of the Himalayas.

 

Visit Raghunathji Temple:

The most famous temple in the area, said to be thousands of years old, this temple is built in dedication to Lord Ram. The temple design is a combination of Buddhist and South-Indian architecture. 

 

Visit Chandrabadani Temple:

Another fabled temple in the area, it can be found on the road to Devprayag 22 km away and 2277 meters above sea-level. It is built in memory of Goddess Sati.

 

Walk across the local Suspension Bridges:

A more offbeat activity, the local suspension bridges in the area offer visitors spectacular views of the surrounding valley, neighbouring Himalayas and historic Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers.

Food options in Devprayag are highly limited to hotels and a few local restaurants like Cafe Romano and Forest Cafe. These cafes tend to offer a variety of dishes at affordable rates as compared to the luxury hotels. Normally, local Garhwali cuisine is on offer at most of these places. This town is relatively small and is frequented by mainly pilgrims and devotees with limited budgets.
