Aurangabad is the largest city of the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, and one of the most touristy cities of the region. The district lies on the undulating uplands of the Deccan Trap and on the basins of the Godavari River and northwest to the Tapi River. Aurangabad is bordered by Jalgaon on the north, Ahmednagar on the south, Nashik on the west and Jalna on the east.

 

Aurangabad is a key city and has good access by air, rail or road. The ideal way to travel to the city would be by rail, but there are other ways as well, as explained below.

By Air

Aurangabad’s airport at Chikalthana caters to domestic flights from Mumbai, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Nagpur, Indore and Pune. The airport is about 10 km from the city and you can hire an auto rickshaw or a cab to reach your destination from the airport.

 

The nearest international airport is at Pune. Pune has domestic flights to cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Jaipur and Hyderabad. There are international flights to Dubai, Sharjah, Frankfurt and Abu Dhabi as well. There are airport shuttle services to Pune city and prepaid taxis and auto rickshaws that may be hired to reach the city. From Pune you could book a domestic flight to Aurangabad or board a bus to your destination.

By Rail

Aurangabad has a rail station that is situated at the Secunderabad – Manmad section of the South Central Railways. The city has trains coming in from most cities and towns including Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Nagpur, Pune, Madurai, Bhopal and Gwalior. There are a number of convenient trains including the air conditioned Jan Shatabdhi that runs from Mumbai to Aurangabad and passenger trains from Hyderabad.

 

Aurangabad bus stand is about 2 km from the railway station. Auto rickshaw and taxi stands are right outside the station.

By Road

Aurangabad’s connectivity to State and National Highways makes travelling to the city easier, with roads leading from Mumbai, Pune, Ahmednagar, Nashik, Nagpur et al. A weekend drive is one good option to reach Aurangabad. There are regular bus services to Aurangabad from most of the neighbouring cities and towns as well, so there is no dearth of transport to the city via road.

There are Aurangabad Municipal Corporation buses (AMT) to get around town. Government Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation buses run to heritage sites like Daluatabad Fort and Ajanta and Ellora caves. There are also special tourist buses with guides for a trip to more tourist places. MSRTC buses that run from Aurangabad to neighbouring towns can be used to get dropped off at tourist points enroute.

 

There are cabs and tuk tuks that can be hired for travel within the city and its suburbs. You also have the option of renting a two wheeler to get around.
