How To Reach Kumarakom

Planning A Trip To Kumarakom? Here are some guidelines on how to reach Kumarakom

Kumarakom is a beautiful getaway island off the shore of Kerala, India. With the tranquility of its backwaters and the quaint setting of the town, it becomes a perfect holiday destination for relaxing. Being of such touristy significance, Kumarakom is very well connected through air, rail and road to major destinations in India. To reach Kumarakom, you can also use the waterways, which are well developed and maintained. In fact, travelling by ferry gives you the experience of real Kerala, through narrow canals and streams, floating on the currents of the backwaters this state is renowned for.

The nearest airport to Kumarakom is Kochi International Airport, situated 45 km away. Kochi is well connected to major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Ahmedabad and operates regular flights. It is just as well connected to important International destinations like Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Columbo etc.

You can hire a car or van from Kochi Airport, or take the bus (state run or private) to travel by road to Kumarakom. The state run buses are much cheaper than the private ones but not as luxurious.

Kumarakom is only 10 km away from Kottayam Station. Kottayam is a bigger city than Kumarakom and very well connected to most cities of Kerala. The trains are operated by the Indian Railways and are regular. They are also a cheap, easy way to reach this beautiful island.

You can hire the usual road transport (car, van, SUV) from Kottayam Station to Kumarakom. The journey is short and easy on the eyes with lush green views.

A town near Alleppey, named Muhamma, plies regular public and private ferries to Kumarakom. Since the waterways are well developed and the State Governement has taken efforts to maintain them, ferries ply regularly and smoothly. In addition to transporting locals to and fro, these ferries are also a cheap and recreational way for tourists to go from point A to B. You will have the most beautiful locales wave you on your way, from swaying tall trees to lush green lands, migratory birds to fishermen at work. Don't miss these rides.
