Paro juggles between restaurants, multi storied concretised buildings on one side and rice fields, painted wooden houses, forests full of wild flora and fauna and ancient monuments on the other.

By Air

Bhutan has one International Airport and that's in Paro. Paro International Airport has direct Royal Bhutan and Druk Air flights from New Delhi, Kolkata, Dhaka, Kathmandu and Guwahati. Paro city is 6 km away from the Airport. From the Paro Airport you can hire taxis to take you to the city. The ride is about 30 minutes.

 

If you are flying from Kathmandu to Paro, peep out of the airplane windows and you will be mesmerised by the lofty peaks of Mt.Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu and Lhotse.

By Road

You can drive upto the Jaigaon-Phuentsholing Border between India and Bhutan. You will be required to submit relevant documents at the Border for entry into Bhutan. After getting the entry pass, proceed towards Paro, which is 160.1 km from Phuentsholing.

 

Indians are allowed to drive their own vehicle to Bhutan and there are buses and shared taxis available as well, to take you to Paro from Phuentsholing Border in about 4 and half hours. Sit back and enjoy the trip to Paro. There are snow-clad mountain peaks and prayer flags fluttering gaily in the winds as you drive down the roads. The journey is made more special with local Bhutanese merchants selling fruits along the way.

By Train

There are no direct trains to Bhutan. Take a train from Kolkata to Siliguri, New Jaipalguri or Hasimara in West Bengal, India. Book a taxi or a bus from these stations to the Jaigaon-Phuentsholing border. From the Border you can book a share taxi or use regular buses which will take you to Paro. The easiest way to reach Paro is to take a train to Hasimara from Kolkata or New Delhi and then travel by road to Phuentsholing. Hasimara is just 17 km away from the Jaigaon-Phuentsholing border. From Phuentsholing, take a taxi to Paro.
