Vellore, the administrative headquarters of the district of Vellore is located on the banks of the Palar River in the state of Tamil Nadu. Vellore district lies close to the borders of the neighbouring states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, so a well knit transport system in between the states is feasible. Vellore is flanked by Bengaluru on its west, Chennai on its east and Chittoor on its north.
Vellore is a well developed industrial and tourist town and has direct and good access by road and rail. The easiest way to reach Vellore would be by rail.

The nearest airport is at Chennai. The third busiest airport in India, Chennai’s Anna International Airport has flights from Singapore, Kuala Lampur, London, Frankfurt, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia. Kamaraj Domestic Airport that is located close to the International Airport has flights from most of the major cities of India including Bengaluru, Pune, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Jaipur. You can hire a cab from the airport to Vellore.

The nearest railway station is Katpadi Junction. There are numerous daily and bi weekly trains to Katpadi from most cities counting Chennai, Coimbatore, Mumbai, Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala et al. From the Katpadi railway Junction, you can engage a cab to Vellore. Nearly 230 trains from over the country halt at Katpadi, so you would have an ample choice of trains to choose from.

There are government and private buses to Vellore from most cities of Tamil Nadu and the rest of the southern states. There are frequent buses from Katpadi to Vellore, with the important terminals being the Old and New Bus Stands. You could also drive to Vellore from places like Chennai or Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. National Highways from Bengaluru to Chennai, Cuddalore to Chittoor and Ranipet to Chennai pass through Vellore.

With local buses, auto rickshaws which are one of the central transport systems of the city, as well as mobile app based taxis, share autos and hired bicycles, you would not find it a bother getting around Vellore. Most of the significant places like the Sripuram Golden Temple are earmarked as touristy places, and they have good bus facilities from the Vellore Bus stand.
