The original Sanskrit name for Patan is Lalitpur, which can literally be translated to ‘City of Beauty’. The origin of the name is related to a number of legends. The most well known among them is the legend of the god Rato Machhendranath, who was brought to the valley from Assam, India by a group of three people; one of whom was named Lalit. The locals believed that the god Rato Machhendranath would bring rain to the valley and help overcome the ongoing drought in the region. It is also believed it was because of Lalit’s efforts that Rato Machhendranath decided to settle in the valley, and the town was named Lalitpur to commemorate his efforts.
The city is most renowned for its architectural marvels that are mostly concentrated around Durbar Square. By Air:

A number of domestic airlines operate between the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan Airport and other major cities in the country. By Road:
Once in Kathmandu, one can choose between taking tourist or local buses from Ring Road or Ratna Park to directly reach Patan Durbar Square. An alternate option is to take a private taxi from Thamel to Patan, which will prove more convenient for tourists.

Autumn (October-November):

Sightseeing:
