Rajgir was the capital during the time of the Magadha Kings in the period 684-320 BC. Thereafter, during the reign of King Ajatshatru the capital shifted to Pataliputra (now Patna) since Pataliputra was located strategically. The founders of both Buddhism, Buddha and Mahavir Jain of the Jain sect had stayed and meditated in Rajgir. Buddha had delivered several sermons to his disciples too at Rajgir. The weather in Rajgir is warm and temperate. The best time to visit Rajgir is in winter, that is, between October and March.

The climate of Rajgir, located in the tropics, is just the same as almost all tropical cities. It is hot in summer and generally humid. The temperature could go as high as 45°C. It is not advisable for tourists to visit Rajgir during the summer season. However, if you need to travel to Rajgir during summer it is advisable to wear only cool cotton clothes right through the day. Drink plenty of water and it is always a good idea to carry your own bottle at all times. Avoid the sun and use a cap or umbrella when you have to be out in the sun.

Monsoons in Rajgir are very wet. There is freshness in the air when it rains and the hills all around become most attractive during this period. Rajgir gets around 885mm of rainfall on an average annually. Rajgir has a great environment during the monsoon. However, it is possible that roads may get flooded, thereby making commuting a difficult proposition. If you need to visit Rajgir during the monsoon it may be a good idea to bring an extra pair of shoes and a good umbrella. Light clothes are recommended.

Winters are very pleasant in Rajgir, just the same as in all the cities nearby. During the winter the temperature is in the range of 8-10°C. Winters are the best season for tourism in Rajgir. The days are pleasant and the nights are a little nippy. Woollen clothes are advised for all visitors to Rajgir in the winter season. Rajgir Mahotsav which is a festival that celebrates dance and music is a 3-day festival in Rajgir. It is a good idea to find out the exact dates of this festival which takes place during the last week of October and attend the memorable festival.
