Tuensang is a town and headquarters of Tuensang, the largest district of Nagaland located in the easternmost part of the state bordering Myanmar. The town was established for the better administration of the north eastern frontier areas and is part of NEFA or North Eastern Frontier Agency. Tuensang is also the hotspot of tribal cultures and heritage and is home to a number of tribal communities, hence attracting tourism. By Air:

Tuensang does not have an airport and tourists traveling to the town have to depend upon Dimapur Airport and Jorhat Airport in Assam. Dimapur Airport is the only airport in Nagaland and both these airports have flights connecting the region to cities like Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi etc. Dimapur Airport is located 293km from Tuensang while Jorhat Airport is 184 km away. From the airports, tourists can take buses and hire cabs to reach their destination.

 

By Rail:

Dimapur also has the only railway station in the state and offers the much-needed rail connectivity with the rest of the country. There are a fair number of trains running through Dimapur to cities like Guwahati and Kolkata and those traveling from other cities have to take a connecting train from Guwahati and Kolkata to reach Dimapur. Dimapur Railway Station is located 280 km from the town of Tuensang while Jorhat Railway Station is located 184 km away.

 

By Road: 

The chief mode of transportation for Tuensang is by road as it does not have an airport or a railway station. They have improved road connectivity that connects it with neighboring cities and towns. National Highway 702 runs through the state of Nagaland and its branch National Highway 702 B connects Tuensang with Longleng. Buses and taxis help connect the town and enjoy great frequency.

 

Getting Around: 

Without a well-developed local transport, far-flung districts like Tuensang cannot thrive. Much depends upon their local transport system and fortunately, buses and cabs are easily available here which makes traveling easy and hassle-free. Tourists can move freely from one area to another. In monsoon, the heavy and incessant showers, however, throws traffic out of gear and is best avoided.

Summer (March to May): 

Summer in Tuensang is moderate and pleasant. The discomfort that is experienced in most parts of the country and in some parts of the state is missing in Tuensang. The temperature continues to hover around 27°C and does not witness any major fluctuations. It is considered one of the best times for exploring Tuensang and spending time outdoors.

 

Monsoon (June to September): 

The subtropical climate of Tuensang is characterized by heavy monsoon showers. Rainfall begins in April and continues through September and June and July are considered the wettest months. Rainfall is substantial and causes flooding disrupting normal life. Tuensang is best avoided during monsoon.

 

Winter (November to February): 

Winter is another beautiful time to visit Tuensang. After the long spell of showers, the skies clear up. Mercury continues to dip and there is a chill in the air. January is the coldest month of the season and temperature falls to as low as 4°C. For those planning to visit Tuensang during winter, they are advised to carry sufficient woolens.

Go on a Culture Trip:

Tuensang is the hotspot of tribal cultures and ancient traditions and customs. It is home to a number of tribal communities who fiercely guard their own customs and ways of life. A trip to Tuensang is an opportunity to witness these cultures and the tribal way of life. There is the Chang tribe who reside in Changsangmonko Village, the Khiamniungan tribe and the Sangtam tribes inhabiting different regions of the district. If your visit coincides with any of their festivals then it is an opportunity to see how they celebrate life and stay together as one big happy family.

 

Witness Naknyulem Festival:

Naknyulem festival is the popular festival of the Chang tribe that is celebrated in the month of July amidst much merrymaking. The festival is filled with singing, dancing and lots of fun games like tug of war, high jump etc. and some weird games which tourists find extremely entertaining. The festival is observed to celebrate friendship, culture, and tradition of their community. A trip in the month of July presents a great opportunity to witness the way of life and celebrations in the tribal world.

 

Trekking:

There is a great opportunity for enthusiastic trekkers in Tuensang. Those traveling to Tuensang can attempt the trek u the highest mountain range in the state, the Saramati Peak that is located 12.552 feet above the sea level. It is a difficult trek with about a 270 km isolated stretch. It is recommended that trekkers go as part of an organized tour. The view from the top is heavenly and breathtaking. Trekkers are treated to a fascinating of the surrounding landscape of their own country and that of Myanmar.

If you are in Tuensang make a quick trip to Noklak village. The village is beautiful and must be explored but the best part of it is the gorgeous backdrop that it boasts of. Tuensang is a far-flung district and town in Nagaland located along the international Indo-Myanmar border. While it enjoys good connectivity it does not offer the variety and luxuries of city life. There are no big restaurants or fine dining options. For food one has to depend upon home-cooked meals or roadside eateries. The food is delicious and sans the flair. Non-vegetarians traveling to Tuensang must give pork cooked with kidney beans and fermented soya a try as also beef and buffalo meat.
