Dimapur is the largest city in the northeastern state of Nagaland. In 1997 it was inaugurated as the 8th district of the state. Bound by Kohima district in the east, Golaghat district of Assam in the north and west, Karbi Anglong district of Assam in the west and Peren district of Nagaland in the south, Dimapur is popularly referred to as the gateway of Nagaland and Manipur and is the fastest developing urban center. Dimapur also enjoys the distinction of having the only railhead and airport in Nagaland. It enjoys great connectivity with neighboring districts and states. Dimapur has the only civil airport in the state. The airport was constructed during WWII. The airport is equipped to manage approximately 500 departing and 300 arriving passengers. Located a mere 9km from the center of the district, it has a number of flights operating in and out of the district from cities like Kolkata, Imphal, and Guwahati which are well connected with the rest of the country. A connecting flight will transport tourists to Dimapur. Public and private carriers like Alliance Air, Indigo, Air India offer flight services to Dimapur on a daily basis.

Dimapur has the only railhead in the state of Nagaland which provides rail connectivity with the neighboring states of Kolkata and Guwahati. The limited connectivity, however, helps to keep the state connected to the rest of the country. Tourists traveling to Nagaland will have to change trains at Guwahati and Kolkata and take a connecting train to Dimapur. Avadh Assam Express, Dibrugarh Guwahati Rajdhani Express, Rangiya Dibrugarh Express, Kamrup Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, Kamakhya Diampur BG Express etc. are some of the rains that travel to and from Dimapur.

Dimapur enjoys improved road connectivity with adjoining towns, cities and states and accounts for its growing importance in the state. NH 39 runs through the district and connecting the cities of Kohima, Imphal as well as the Myanmar border at Moreh. NH 36 connects Dimapur to Doboka while NH 37 connects Guwahati with Dimapur. The network of national highways gives Dimapur and the state of Nagaland the much-needed access. There are regular bus services and taxis to help tourists travel from one area to another.

As one of the fastest developing districts of Nagaland and a growing urban center, Dimapur has a well-developed local transportation system. They have buses plying at intervals of 5-10 minutes. Nagaland State Transport (NST) operates regular bus services. Autos, rickshaws, car taxis are easily available to transport tourists from one place to another and for sightseeing. Rental cabs are also available.
