Kargil lies in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir in the Ladakh division. After Leh, Kargil is the second largest town in Ladakh. It is located about 204 km from Srinagar, 234 km from Leh and 240 km from Padum. This is the place that became renowned all over after the 1999 Kargil War (Indo-Pak war). Running in the north-south direction, the district spans the entire length of the state. There are different ways to reach Kargil. By Air

Kushhok Bakula Rimpochhe Airport located in Leh is the closest airport to Kargil. It is a popular airport with a fair number of flights taking off and landing in Leh from neighbouring cities like Srinagar, Jammu, Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh. The airport is about 219 km from Kargil. Srinagar airport is also a popular airport close to Kargil, about 234 km. Jet Airways, Spice Jet, Go Air, Air India and IndiGo operate regular flights to and from Srinagar. From the airports tourists can hire cars to reach Kargil.

By Rail

Kargil does not have a railway station and the closest railhead is Jammu Tawai in Jammu. It is about 739 km from the district. Rajdhani Express Mumbai Central-Jammu Tawi Swaraj Express daily connects Delhi and Mumbai with Jammu respectively. From Jammu there are no regular buses or trains to take tourists to Kargil. They can hire taxis to reach the district.

Kargil has good connectivity as compared to other villages. There are regular private and public buses plying between Kargil and neighbouring cities like Srinagar and Jammu. There are deluxe coaches available from Kargil to Leh and Srinagar. With no railheads or airports in Kargil, buses and taxis are the only modes of transportation to reach Kargil. Indica and SUVs are regularly used by tourists to reach the district.

Kargil town is small and can be explored by foot. It is the best way to enjoy the charming town and soak in the beauty and serenity of the surrounding landscape. However tourists can avail of taxis as well for sightseeing. There are private and public buses that ply between the different tourist spots in the area.
