How To Reach Ladakh
Planning A Trip To Ladakh? Here are some guidelines on how to reach Ladakh
Ladakh lies between the greater Himalayas and the Kunlun mountain range and is best described as a rocky terrain marked by rivers and lakes, surrounded by ice-capped mountain peaks. Being a difficult place to live in due to the terrain and altitude, Ladakh has the advantage of remaining untouched by development and can prove to be a great place for you to unwind in the majesty of nature.
During the winter months, the roads are covered by thick sheets of ice, making it impossible to use them. However, flight services are usually available throughout the year and make for the best way to reach Ladakh.

There are two routes to Ladakh. First the Srinagar-Leh road through the Zoji-La pass. And second the Manali-Leh route through the Rupsho plateau. The roads usually open from mid-June and remain so until the end of September. These are perhaps the most coveted routes for riders. The Zoji-La pass lies at an altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level and some parts of the Manali-Leh route can get as high as 14000 feet! The road is dotted with monasteries and is a great way to witness the Ladakhi lifestyle.
Besides biking, a number of other options are available. Deluxe and ordinary bus services by Himachal Roadways are quite dependable. From Delhi, it would take 2 days with a night stay at Kargil, Sarchu or Pang depending on the route you take. The night stay helps greatly to adjust to the altitude sickness.

The Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport situated amidst the mountains is an important transport facility for the area, as it is the only service open to people throughout the year. However, it should be noted that flight services depend heavily on the weather conditions. Be ready for delayed or canceled flights during winters. Usually, it is best to have a flexible schedule if you are traveling during off season.

The nearest rail-head is the Jammu Tawi Railway Station from where you can travel by flight or if you are traveling in summer you can follow the road. Once in Ladakh, you will find public buses quite regularly. You can either use them or avail the taxi service. The towns in Ladakh are fairly small and it is common to travel by foot from one end to the other.
