Netherlands, the name is a Dutch play on the meaning ‘lower lands or flat lands’ as is the case with this country. It is a northwestern country nestled in Europe and is renowned for its canals, beautiful houses by those canals, houseboats where people literally live, and museums - loads and loads of museums. That is the best way to reach the country from India after all.

Air India, Air France, Emirates, Lufthansa, British Airways etc fly regularly to the Schiphol International Airport from Indian cities like Mumbai and Delhi. The airport is located 15 km away from the city centre of Amsterdam and is the third busiest airport in Europe when it comes to handling traffic. You have the option of boarding public buses from the airport to the city or hire  private cab to transfer you to your hotel.

Moving around in Netherlands is quite easy and the roads are just perfectly made as the flatland of its topography aids in the task. You can drive into Netherlands from Germany and Belgium without much hassle if you have your papers and visa documents in place, along with an international driving licence if you are the one driving the car. Many international and EU bus services also ply into Netherlands from London, Paris etc. These are a cheaper bet than private vehicles. You can also choose to do a road trip within Netherlands itself and enjoy the sweeping meadows of tulips passing you by (especially in the spring and summer seasons).

The country enjoys excellent rail network within and outside its borders. You can board high speed trains into Amsterdam from all major European destinations like Paris, London, Brussels, Frankfurt and Berlin. It is moot to point out that the scenery and the experience of a train journey will be just as rewarding as your destination in this case. Amsterdam Central Station is the main hub of most trains departing and arriving into Netherlands.

Amsterdam does enjoy the position of a great and significant maritime port on the western borders of Europe. You can take a cruise from England or France who share Netherlands' waters and enjoy a luxurious sea travel. Also, the country is rife with canals more than 300 years old and ply boats regulalry for everyday chores.

Cycle. Cycle. Cycle. When in Netherlands, do as the Dutch do. Hire a bicycle and peddle around wherever you want to go. The country has remained so clean and green thanks to its locals being industrious and choosing to cycle their way to work, meet friends, go to college, go for drinks, sometimes even go to another city. Hiring a car might be redundant in cities like Amsterdam where most roads are one-ways and you will inevitably have to park your car far away from your destination. Another great way to enjoy commute in Netherlands is by boats of course. They take you to lanes and houses you will never be able to reach by car or on foot. There are buses available for public transport if you want as well.
