Pune, the second most prominent city of Maharashtra, lies about 1,840 ft above msl on the western borders of the Deccan Plateau. The Western Ghats rises up on the west of Pune forming a barrier against the Arabian Sea. The city is situated where the Mutha and Mula rivers meet and is known predominantly for its number of hills and Ghats, the foothills, highlands and plains which contributes much to the tourist attraction of Pune.

 

The ideal way to reach Pune is by rail.

By Air

Pune International or Lohegaon Airport is an international airport at Pune that caters to flights from Nagpur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Kolkata, Kochi, Imphal, Nagpur, Indore and Goa. There are international flights to Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Frankfurt. You can hire a cab or auto rickshaw from near the airport to reach your destination. Pune airport is about 10 km from the city centre.

By Rail

There is a good rail service that connects Pune to the rest of the country. There are superfast and express trains that link Pune to cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Thirunelveli, Karaikal, Puducherry, Bengaluru, Bikaner, Trivandrum, Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

 

There are taxis, auto rickshaws and local buses that stop near the railway station and can be used to reach your destination.

Intrastate buses connect Pune to significant cities like Mumbai, Ahmadnagar, Bijapur and Aurangabad. The Mumbai – Pune Expressway links the city to the capital city of Mumbai. Pune is easily accessible by road from the neighbouring states of Goa, Telangana and Karnataka. Buses also run to Pune from cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kerala et al.

There are local buses run by Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML), though they may be crowded during peak hours. Alternately, you could hail a taxi or an auto rickshaw, or use the Uber/Ola apps. If you are travelling solo or in pairs, you could also hire a scooty or a bike.
