Matheran Weather And Best Time To Visit Matheran
Planning A Trip To Matheran? Here's a snapshot of Matheran weather and the best time to visit Matheran
Matheran, the quaint little hill station of the Western Ghats, is far different from the other hill towns. It has a pristine climate, unfazed by the air and noise pollution caused by vehicles or tarred roads. When urban dwellers need a short break from the hustle of city lives, they head to Matheran whose beautiful seasons are a welcome change from the humidity on the plains. If you choose the right season to visit Matheran, you can indulge in sightseeing, photography and adventure tourism.
Matheran’s weather is glorious throughout the year, but the most ideal months for a visit would be from October to May.
Summer (March - June)

The average summer temperature rises up to about 35°C, so while the plains are sweltering in the heat of the sun, Matheran warms up a little slowly. Summers are good for short treks and as the peaks are not misty like they are during winters, but clear and warm, you could explore the sights better. In the month of May, join Matheran in celebrating the global forest celebration called Matheran Green Festival that stands for conservation of nature and environment.
Summer is peak tourist season, with people coming in to the hill town to escape the heat of summer. If you are planning to stay, book accommodations in advance.
Monsoon (July - September)

Monsoon rains are rather beautifully in Matheran, with the waterfalls and streams engorged with monsoon waters and the landcape turning green and verdant. But monsoon showers are quite heavy and roads turn slushy, so travel and sightseeing becomes a bother. Matheran has no concrete roads, but red laterite covered pathways and it’s always better to wear sensible shoes while you are visiting the town.
Trekking is one of the most favourite ways to explore the town and the rains may play spoilsport to walking around the region. Monsoon is not a very touristy season; but if you love the rains, you may visit Matheran while keeping an umbrella and a raincoat handy.
Winter (October - February)

Winter is such a beautiful time to be in Matheran, what with a green carpeted landscape below thanks to the monsoon rains, and misty peaks above. Winter calls for an unhindered tourist trip as well as adventure tourism of all sorts. In winter you would be able to spot an assortment of endemic and migrating birds like the Indian Blue Robin, Brown Wood Owl and Nilgiri Wood Pigeon near the seasonal streams or the trails of the hill town.
Book accommodation in advance and keep sweaters and woollens handy as the days are mildly warm but the nights are cool. Keep an eye open for the mischievous monkeys of Matheran!
