Spring from March to May is one of the best times to visit Punakha. The ground turns into a blossom of wild flowers. Days in spring are warm, the weather is pleasant and that makes sightseeing, especially trekking up the mountain slopes very appealing. Spring time celebrates the Punakha Dromche, one of the most popular festivals of Bhutan. Average temperature during spring ranges between 9-27°C.

Summer

Summer from June to August brings occasional rains, especially during midday, as the monsoon seasonal rains are concentrated towards the southern sides. The days are hot nevertheless, but nights are cool. Summer is off season and it’s cheaper to travel to Punakha in this season, so you can avail lower tariffs. Temperature averages from 19°C to 32°C. Carry a raincoat or umbrella for the rains and sunglasses for the day.

Autumn

Autumn from September to November is also the best time to visit Punakha. The skies are clear, giving you a clear picture of the lofty mountain peaks. Autumn is a good time for trekking and photography. Autumn is also the time when Bhutan’s staple red rice is harvested. The sight of the mounds of rice straws drying under the warm sun by the Mo Chuu River is a delight for your eyes. Temperature varies from 13-29°C.

Winter

Winter from December to February brings a mild weather with clear days and cold nights. Punakha lies in the lower parts of Bhutan so winter is not too cold. Winter is off season, therefore travelling to Punakha during this period might get you accommodation at reasonable prices. Temperature varies from 4-19°C. At the lower altitudes, winter is a good time for trekking in Punakha. There is occasional, light snowfall in February.
