Its history is said to date back to the days of the Ramayana when King Janaka ruled the Videha kingdom under which Muzaffarpur happened to fall. Sita is said to have been born in Sitamarhi which is a town nearby. Much later in 500 BC this region was a part of the Licchavi-ruled area although there were other clans that ruled the area as well. It was also a part of the Mughal Kingdom till, with the Battle of Buxar in 1764, the entire region passed on to the East India Company and the British Empire. Ramna’s Tripur Sundari Temple is a temple which attracts thousands of devotees. This is basically due to the inherent charm and beauty that the grand temple possesses. Built by Shri Umashankar Prasad who was a man of great wealth, the temple is also known as Devi Temple. The temple was built on 28th of June in the year 1941. All devotees and casual visitors admire the mesmeric quality of the idol. Visitors also comment on the peaceful and pious environment radiated by the temple.

The museum known as the Ram Chandra Shahi Museum was built in the year 1979 very close to the Jubba Sahni Park. The museum has some excellent exhibits which dwell on several different subjects. There are ancient utensils as well as ornate statues of Manasa Nag and Ashtadikpal. There are several other artefacts which impress visitors. There are some of the rarest postage stamps in the museum’s philatelic collection. However, the museum is not very large although it is very attractive indeed.

Among other things, Muzaffarpur is well known as the leader in litchi production in the country. There are therefore several litchi gardens that are popular for hundreds of visitors who throng them in season. The district produces around three lakh tonnes of the delicious fruit each year. You must try and visit the district during the May-June period just to get an idea of the immense production of litchis which also attracts bees. The fruit is cultivated in more than 25,000 hectares of land in the district.

Baba Garibnath Temple, located in Muzaffarpur is among the most famous of the Shiva Temples found anywhere. The story goes that a Shiva Lingam was found within a large-sized banyan tree that was growing within the temple premises. The lingam was found when the tree was being chopped in order to clean up the premises of the temple. It is believed that one Baba Garibnath appeared in the landlord’s dreams and he asked the landlord to start the regular worship of the now famous lingam.

Jubba Sahni was one of the great freedom fighters of India. Born in 1906 to a poor family in Muzaffarpur, he is a matter of pride to the city dwellers who have named a children’s park in his honour. Jubba Sahni died in 1944. This park is popular with the locals and visitors equally. The park is maintained well and you will find it a good place to relax after your long walk. The Jubba Sahni Park is fairly well known and you will not find it difficult to locate it. Though it is just like any other park you will find that it is inviting.

Located about five kilometres from Aurai Block HQ in Muzaffarpur district, Rajkhand is well known for its temple that is known as Bhairav Nath. The place has a cattle fair every year and tourists take the opportunity to visit many other attractions that are located close by. Some of these are Ramna Gurudwara and Radha Krishna Temple besides Badi Masjid and Hathilwa Math. Mahashivratri festival is the time when this cattle fair is held and visitors should try to visit this place during this festival.

Chaturbhuj Sthan Temple of Muzaffarpur is popular because of its spirituality and faith. There is a story regarding the temple. It seems that a large idol of Lord Chaturbhuj was first discovered in Turki village. But, this idol actually gained prominence when a Shiva Lingam was brought to a location which was under a tree in Muzaffarpur from Turki and thereafter worshipped along with Lord Chaturbhuj. This actually happened when a Shiva worshipping saint dreamt that Lord Chaturbhuj wanted him to place the lingam next to his idol.
