One-Horned Rhino and Tiger Reserves

The major attraction that draws thousands of tourists to the national park is the endangered one-horned rhino. Kaziranga is the world’s sole natural habitat for these animals and it is a delight to spot them in action. There are approximately 2200 rhinos inhabiting the park. Over time the tiger population has also increased considerably in Kaziranga and in 2006 it was declared as a Tiger Reserve. There are over 100 tigers to be found roaming the wild forests.
Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park

When in Kaziranga, one can’t certainly give the orchid park a miss. It is a must visit destination as the park is one of the biggest of its kind. Presently it boasts of housing 500 varieties of orchids which have been collected from different regions of the North East. One can also come across different species of leafy vegetables, canes and bamboos as well. In the evenings, the orchid park hosts a cultural program for its visitors where the latter are treated to the local bamboo and Bihu dance. It is an opportunity to soak in the culture of the state.

Majuli

Sibsagar or Rangpur located 170 km from the park is famous for its monuments and architectural beauty. Talatal Ghar, Joysagar Tank and temples like Jeydol, Devi Ghar and Shiv temple located on the banks of the river are the major attractions. There is the Ahom Museum which contains information about the dynasty that ruled Assam for years.
Jorhat Tea Estate

This is a place famous for the myth of birds committing suicide. It is a little far from the national park as compared to the other places, around 277 km but can be visited if tourists have sufficient time to explore. The myth is not true but it is believed that the birds crash into the tall bamboo trees in the darkness of the night which often kills them. To feed your curiosity, you can pay a visit to Jatinga.
