Today it is also a great tourist spot, attracting people for Sherathang, the border trade market where people can buy Tibetan wares at cheap prices. There is also Sikkim Point, Kulup and the View point where you literally float with the clouds.

Lachen is a beautiful snow-covered fairytale village of Sikkim, located in the northern part of the state. Lachen is the half of Lachen-Lachung, where Lachen is the low altitude settlement and Lachung the high altitude. The beauty of this little hamlet is unrivalled, from lakes to postcard-worthy meadows, rhododendron forests to monasteries and mountains. Do visit Gurudongmar Lake,  Mt Pandim, Khangchendzonga and Lachung Gompa. Yumthang Valley is also not far from here.

Zuluk

Zuluk is a special little village on the Silk Route passing through Sikkim. It is offbeat, and not very popular on the tourist circuit, hence best for those who want to soak in Sikkim’s beauty without all that crowd. The winter snowfall here is to-die-for! Some of the fog around makes you wonder if you are floating on clouds itself. There is the Nag Temple and Thambi View Point for sightseeing, but otherwise Zuluk is best enjoyed with a cup of coffee, sitting out in the open.

Yuksom

A small historical town, Yuksom is located in western Sikkim. It forms the gateway to Mt. Kanchenjunga, calling out to all nature and adventure enthusiasts. Popular also as Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve, this national park on the slope of Kanchenjunga mountain is great for trekkers and nature lovers. Trails here are coveted and lead you to many beautiful places like Dzongri, Yuksom, Goechala, Zemu Glacier, Bakim et al. This is also Sikkim’s biggest wildlife reserve and a place to find the elusive red panda. If you are lucky, you will also spot wandering Snow Leopards, Himalayan black bears and Tibetan antelopes.

Yumesamdong

Yumesamdong is famously called the Zero Point, because for all intents and purposes, this is the place where the civilisation ends. No roads or settlements are found further from here. It is about 15 km from the town of Yumthang and best visited for the views, silence and the eerie feeling of being alone in the whole wide world. Lachung nearby is the best bet to spend the night, and enjoy a rustic village life before you head back to civilisation.

Mangan

Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar is a unique lake, held on top of a plateau. It is considered one of the highest of its kind in the world, with an altitude of almost 18000 ft. Glaciers of Kang Chengyao feed this lake. Gurudongmar Lake is believed to be holy by many — Buddhists, Hindus as well as Sikhs. You can visit it in summers, but between November and May, it freezes over completely. Yaks and Blue sheep wander around this lake, while the secluded feeling reverberates inside you.

Aritar

That’s Aritar for you. You can take a taxi from Gangtok to Aritar in East Sikkim and it takes you only 4 hours to reach. The spring-summer months of March, April, May and even some of June are great!

Geyzing

Geyzing is West Sikkim’s capital. Its significance though is also due to the commercial viability for locals. It is the hub of trade and commerce, as well as remains open throughout the year. This ensures you get all facilities in Geyzing. As for sightseeing and fun, there is River Ranjeet roaring by it and Kanchenjunga mountain rising tall in the backdrop. Many monasteries and picnic points also await you. Again, the spring-summer months from March to June are the best to visit.
