Situated on the upper reaches of Brahmaputra River, Majuli is the largest river island in India, located in the state of Assam. About 200 km from Guwahati, Majuli was spread across an area of 483 sq. m but due to erosion, it is lost considerable amount of area. Today it has an area of 163 sq. m, with a population of 1.6 lakhs. Inhabited by the tribal people, Majuli has emerged as the abode of Assamese Vaishnavite culture. There are regular flights operating from Guwahati and other eastern and north-eastern cities to reach Jorhat Airport, also known as Rowriah Airport. From Jorhat, tourists can take a bus or hire a taxi to reach Neemati Ghat located 14 km from Jorhat. From Neemati Ghat there are ferry services which tourists can avail to reach Majuli. There are two ferry rides from Neemati Ghat to Majuli each day. The timings are 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.

There are no railway stations in Majuli. To reach Majuli by train, tourists will have to take trains from Guwahati to reach Jorhat, the nearest railhead to Majuli. From Jorhat, buses and taxis will transport tourists to Neemati Ghat where ferries are available for a ride to Majuli.

As a river island, Majuli is not connected by roadways to any major cities or towns. Hence buses or taxis cannot ferry tourists to the little island. One can reach Jorhat by road. From Guwahati, a 7 hour bus ride will transport tourists to Jorhat. Likewise, passengers can also hire a private taxi to reach Jorhat. From here however, they will have to rely on ferries to reach Majuli.

Majuli is a small river island. There are no taxis, buses or autos available for commuting around Majuli. Tourists have to depend upon boats to explore the island and the river. For moving around within the island, one can rent bicycles or simply stroll down.
