A national park located on River Brahmaputra’s northern bank, the Orang National Park is situated in Assam’s Darrang and Sonitpur Districts. The park was set up as a sanctuary in 1985 and titled a national park in April ’99. With abundant flora and fauna, the Orang National Park is renowned for habituating the Great Indian Rhino, Asian Elephants, Bengal Tiger, Pygmy Hog and Wild Water Buffalos amongst other animal, reptile and bird species. This national park’s the only refuge for Rhinos in the North Bank. The park is well connected by air, road and rail with neighboring towns in the state, with the closest town being Tezpur at 32km and Guwahati at 140km. Located 15km from the N.H 52, near the Orang Town, the closest train station to the park is at Salonibari at 41km. The closest airport to Orang National Park is at Salonibari.

Even though the closest airport to Orang National Park is in Tezpur, one of the best ways to reach the National Park is to take a flight to Guwahati and then make the onward journey to Orang National Park. Travel from New Delhi to Guwahati takes roughly 4 hours (inclusive of flight and transfers) at an estimated fare of INR 4,000-13,000. From Guwahati, you can make the onward journey to Orang National Park by train, cab or drive down yourself. Airlines operating on this route include Indigo, Air India, GoAir, Air Asia, Spicejet and Vistara.

If you’re traveling from New Delhi, then a train to Guwahati takes about 28 hours in the approximate cost of INR 850. Indian Railways operate train nos. 12424, 12502 and 20506 to Guwahati with trains leaving twice a day from New Delhi. From Guwahati, you can then take another train to Batadrowa Road, which will take roughly 5 hours and then take a cab to Orang National Park, which is another hour and 44 minutes. There’s a train for Batadrowa Road once daily from Guwahati at 17.45 hours.

The Orang National Park’s well accessible by road from its neighboring towns and cities and there is plenty of bus services to and from the park to other nearby places. The Salonibari Railway Station being the closest to the National Park at 55km, taxis are available easily to help you reach the National Park, while the road distance between Guwahati and Orang Park is 109km and roughly a 2 hour’s drive.

There are many buses from Guwahati to Tezpur, with a stop-over at Orang, about 26km from the park. From there, it is fairly easy to travel in and around the Orang National Park by Jeep Safaris arranged for by the Forest Department, which is not only a popular tourist activity but also an important means of getting around inside the premises. You can also visit the villages located close to the sanctuary by Jeeps.
