It is most well known for being the first capital of the state of Sikkim, and is situated about 120 km away from the present day capital of Gangtok. The quickest way to reach Yuksom is to catch a flight to Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, West Bengal. It is an international airport that connects to all major cities in India and is around 170 km away from Yuksom. After landing in Bagdogra, the rest of the distance to Yuksom can be covered via road through buses or private cabs for hire, which takes about 4-5 hours.

The closest railhead to reach Yuksom via train is the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in West Bengal. It is well connected to major cities like Delhi, Guwahati, Lucknow and Kolkata, with a number of trains traveling between these regions on a regular basis. The station is located around 160 km away from Yuksom, and upon reaching New Jalpaiguri, one can avail state transport buses or private cabs to journey the rest of the distance to Yuksom.

Yuksom has good road connections to major areas of Sikkim and West Bengal. Regular bus services to Yuksom can be availed from Gangtok, Geyzing, Siliguri and Kolkata. Those traveling from Siliguri and Kolkata can choose to take the West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation luxury overnight buses since the journey can last anywhere from 12-16 hours.
Traveling from some other areas requires availing the use of private cabs and reserved taxis as these areas do not have the alternative of bus services. Some regions provide the option of shared jeeps too.
The best route to take while traveling to Yuksom is the Jorethang Road, which is in a relatively better condition than other roads, and offers the safest and fastest route.

The small village of Yuksom is best explored on foot. Since it is also a popular trekking location, most of the visitors here are already familiar with the type of terrain in Yuksom. There are also tour jeeps that travel to this region and this option can be availed by those willing to travel in groups.
