How To Reach Imphal
Planning A Trip To Imphal? Here are some guidelines on how to reach Imphal
The capital of the north-eastern state Manipur, Imphal is the metropolitan centre of the region and also Manipur’s top tourist destination. Situated within the middle of the Manipur valley, Imphal is one of the most ancient cities in the Indian subcontinent and is a treasure trove of historical wonders. Apart from its immense cultural significance, Imphal is also known for its natural beauty that oozes out of every inch of this city’s corner. Travelling within the city is quite convenient as well, which makes it a great spot for tourists to unwind and explore different attractions of Imphal at their own leisure. Imphal’s airport is located about 8 km away from the city centre. The Imphal Tulihal International Airport is the only airport in the state and connects Manipur to various cities across India and outside via regularly operating domestic and international flights; the most common ones being to and from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. Both public and private transportation in the form of buses and taxis are available outside the airport for all other destinations in the city.
By Rail

As well-connected as Imphal is, there are no rail services that operate in Manipur. If you do decide to travel by train, the nearest railway station is situated in Dimapur; a little over 200 km from Imphal. Rail connectivity to Guwahati Railway Station is better than it is for Dimapur though, but this railhead is also located much farther away at a distance of about 500 km. The rest of the journey between Dimapur/Guwahati and Imphal is covered via road.

Travellers have the option to take the road route to Imphal from neighbouring cities and towns. While taxis and private cabs are available for hire, they can prove to be an expensive option for most. There are a number of public buses run by the Manipur State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) that connect Imphal to neighbouring interstate cities, which is a cheap way to travel if you are on a budget. Since the road routes are well-connected and in decently good condition, the journeys are usually very comfortable. Those travelling through private buses can choose between regular to deluxe options. Private buses are available daily from Guwahati on NH 2, NH 27 and NH 29; from Dimapur on NH 2; and from Silchar on NH 37.
Getting Around

Imphal is a busy commercial city, so getting around to different regions within the town isn’t much of a problem. There are buses, cabs and even auto-rickshaws – commonly known as tuk-tuks here – available to take you to different places across Imphal. Those who arrange their tours through travel agencies are usually taken around in company vehicles with a guide often in tow to help them navigate through the different hotspots of the city.
