Located in the Sivasagar District of Assam, Sivasagar meaning Shiva’s Ocean is a city, which earned its name from the big lake, commissioned by then Ahom Ruler King Siva Singha. Situated 360km of Guwahati on the northeastern side, the city’s encompassed by the Dehing rainforest at the point where the Lohit and Dihing Rivers meet. Going way back to the time of Ahom Dynasty the city’s culturally brimming with tourist spots with ancient connection and architectural masterpieces that include citadels and temples, water tanks, artificial lakes and other historical monuments. The town of Sivasagar is well connected to most major parts of Assam.

The closest airport to Sivasagar is about 75km away at Jorhat, where there are a number of airlines connected to the major metros of the country and operate flights daily. Alternatively, you can also fly to Dibrugarh Airport which is roughly 95km from Sivasagar. From the airports, you can hail a cab to the city. One of the fastest ways of reaching Sivasagar is to fly to Dibrugarh from the IGI Airport, New Delhi in roughly 2 and ½ hours at an estimated fare of INR 4.600 and either take a train or a cab to Sibsagar Town.

Sivasagar’s closest train station is at Sibsagar Town Railway Station, which receives both local and express trains carrying passengers to and from here, including the Bengaluru Weekly, Dibrugarh-Agartala, Dibrugarh Intercity and more. If you’re coming from Dibrugarh then there’s a train for Sibsagar Town Railway Station thrice a day and takes about an hour or so to reach here at an estimated fare of INR 105. Alternatively, you can board a train from the Rowriah Sdg, Jorhat to Sibsagar Town Railway Station and reach here in about 3 hours and a few minutes.

By Road

Sivasagar is well connected by road to major cities like Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Itanagar. From Jorhat Town, you can hire a taxi for INR 850 (one way) and reach Sivasagar in about 51 minutes or alternatively, drive down yourself. The NH-37 which connects the state of Assam to its western border with Bengal and then A.P on the Northeastern end, also connects Sivasagar with Guwahati and Kaziranga, on one end and Dibrugarh on the other.

There are a number of both private and state-run buses that make for public transportation from all the major cities in the state to Sivasagar. You will find shuttles and autorickshaws for getting in and around the city, in addition to cycle ricks or tempos.
