Vaishno Devi

A temple town near Jammu City, Vaishno Devi is 59 km away from the city centre, and is best visited over a winter or spring weekend. It is renowned for the Vaishno Devi Temple, a shakti peeth inside a cave. Pilgrims trek on foot, singing and chanting the name of the goddess and climb almost 14 km to pray. Aside from the temple itself there is the Ardh Kuwari Cave and Bhairavnath Shrine to be visited nearby. If you are around for more than a day or two then also do visit Katra.

Mcleodganj, the town of Dalai Lama, is 197 km from Jammu and a perfect hill station vacation. A weekend over summer season is great, especially to escape the scorching summer heat of Jammu region. When in Mcleodganj, you have much to do. From visiting tall peaks and waterfalls to picnicking by lakes and touring monasteries. Visit the Namgyal Monastery, chill at the Bhagsu Fall, trek up Triund Mountain Peak and enjoy the hot chocolate, thukpa, momos and fries at local cafes.

Summer months between April and October are perfect to visit, but skip the monsoon of July-August. Best visited from March through May, this little town in Himachal is located 177 km from Jammu. The tranquility and charm of its Victorian houses, pine trees, emerald meadows and fog-hung mountains stays in your eyes long after your weekend is up.
